Quality Creative Ingestion of 2005

Some of the greats which came to my attention last year – starting with 3 great albums:
bestmusic05.jpg
Matisyahu: Live at Stubb’s– This hasidic reggae/dancehall artist from Crown Heights is no novelty act. This live album showcases his powerful backing band and a rapid-fire yet soulful voice.
Oranger: New Comes and Goes– Strong 4th album from this Californian outfit … Radio Wave has been one of my favorite songs of this past year.
Dungen: Ta Det Lugnt– Swedish Psych/Folk/Rock which sounds like it was pryed from an early seventies time capsule. Brother J and I caught them at the Bowery Ballroom and they were damn impressive.
bestother05.jpg
Orson’s Shadow– A play showing at the Barrow St. Theater in Greenwich Village. A great true story about the dueling egos of Orson Wells and Lawrence Olivier.
Good Night Good Luck– David Strathairn puts in an incredible performance in this important film.
Cloud Atlas– As Keegan and Kerry could attest – an engrossing, genre-jumping novel.
Superman The Movie– My favorite rediscovered movie of the past year.

Octopus Shirts

octopus_shirts.jpg
I just finished these silkscreened octopus shirts for my adorable nieces for our post-Christmas get-together. I did a few silkscreens in college, and have always been meaning to do more, and beef up on my silkscreening skills. These came out alright, but I have much work to do…I went through three sets of screens before getting the exposure just right for the photo-emulsion / transparency transfer process.
If you have any interest in doing any silkscreening, be sure to nab the very helpful “Re” guide to reproduction. More silkscreens to come in the new year!

These pictures are from a Mexico excursion, a story for the NY Daily News. And what a marvelous country. These pics are unrelated to the story. I bought a new camera for this odyssey and had lots of fun trying it out.

Sod Farm

kon_field_sm.jpg
Another small painting done on the North Fork. This one is of a sod farm in Mattituck. I scouted out (sketched) the location this summer. Doing so allowed me to complete the painting in an afternoon. The painting is oil on canvas board, 8×16 inches.
