InvisWSJ-Olympic-Pin.jpg

In the course of my employ in the wsj.com art department I recently had the opportunity to design their Olympic pin. Pin trading is a long tradition at the Olympics so it was an honor to do it. Editor Adam Thompson had requested I do something fun that perhaps included a beaver or perhaps a mountie. So I came up with these designs and naturally the beaver-on-snowboard look won out. I delivered the vector version (top right) and it was cool to see how the final product came out (top left). One of these just sold on ebay for $52.75!

hi! it's me again! Having a 9.5 month old certainly keeps me busy (in a great way!!) But i have begun to emerge from my shell and create some artwork again. (And... I am soon am taking an illustration class, taught by tim gough at uarts, and hopefully i will be making some great new work in the not-to-distant future!)

In the meantime, i have begun to design baby shower and wedding invitations for the two very popular websites tiny prints and wedding paper divas. The baby shower invitations are selling very well, and some wedding invitations just went up this week. (You can see the wedding designs on my website blog, here.)

Over the years I've done a lot of skateboarding, most intensely in the mid-eighties to early nineties and these days cruising the streets of midtown Sacto on a longboard. Recently the Wall Street Journal's Conor Dougherty wrote about what an incredibly skate-friendly city Portland Oregon is and to my luck the WSJ editors requested an interactive map of the best skateparks across the US. As soon as I got the assignment I knew what to do. Click on the image of above to see a larger version or the link below to see the interactive version -- and take a few minutes to read the rad article as well.

This past May my sweetie Kristina and I tied the knot in the Hudson Valley north of New York City where we were living. We've since relocated into the chillness of northern California. The wedding was an amazing time and a wonderful way to wrap up our 10 years in the city. Below is the invitation I designed and illustrated. It was a fun challenge to create the illo in such a way that it would align in the middle of the gatefold.

I've been doing some one inch square grid collages lately. It helps me to be more precise in making art. Gotta love it!

yes. its been a REALLY long time since i posted. Last we "spoke" i was getting married... well, i did... and then 9 months later (plus a day) i gave birth to a beautiful baby boy! needless to say, it's been a very exciting year.

i have just begun to emerge from the baby bubble... and will slowly begin to create again (time permitting, of course) but here's something recent that i designed & really like. i created the artwork & designed the poster for the riverfolk music + art festival in Manchester, MI. i hope for more fun projects such as this in the coming year.

fortuna_500.jpg
Spoonflower is a pretty amazing website / service that prints up custom made fabric from your designs (and for a very reasonable price). Earlier this year, Julie and I collaborated on a fabric design, using elements she drew for use on her re-designed website. I designed the pattern from the shapes, and took cues for the palette from her work.

Spoonflower has a cool weekly contest for the community, where they pick six designs that have been submitted and have an online vote open to the public to vote for the "Fabric of the Week". Well this week, our design is in the running! We need your vote to win! You don't need to register, just visit this link and vote for "Fortuna" by Jon Keegan & Julie Kirkpatrick.

Thanks for your support!

fell_swoop_cd_photos_500.jpg

Here are some photos of the One Fell Swoop CD I've been posting about (by the Amsterdam based duo Rara Avis). It's nice to see the finished product, and for a change, it's an object people will keep around rather than something someone will throw out after they are done reading the article...Thanks to Terri for bringing me the CD's, and hope you get well soon!

New artwork for a cd +booklet I am working on designing for the band "Smile Pretty Mysery". Check em out. They are really good.

(To get the textures, I gouached some pieces of trace paper, cut them out into fun 'lil shapes, scanned them in and placed them in my friend, illustrator CS3.)

arctic-map.gif

I recently worked on a project for the Wall Street Journal Online which tracked the rate at which the arctic ice cap has melted over the last quarter of a century. Click here to see the astonishing rate of decrease since 1979 - with the past six years or so of particular worry (you may have to turn your popup blocker off for the link to work... sorry). The magenta line is the median ice extent and is an average of where the ice would normally be on September 1st of each year (around 7.5 million sq miles). As you can see above this summer only reached 4.4 million sq miles. The graphic also covers how arctic tourism industry is booming as visitors want to catch of glimpse of the environment before its gone.

voice-media-banners.jpg
I just finished creating these designs for the Village Voice media kit (the packet they give out to advertisers and clients and such). It was fun working up this subway tile theme, though I underestimated the amount of effort doing all these little tiles would take. I seriously dreamt in tiles for quite a few nights.

As part of the project I also created this logo which adorns the front of the media kit and various other promotions.

salomon-entry.jpg
This past spring Salomon Snowboards had an artwork contest for some of their 2008 boards. While I didn't come away with the fame and prize money it was fun working up this illustration as an entry. I had a feeling it might be a bit too messy (and perhaps spooky) for their tastes but its a color palette and style I've dug working in lately.

yes. i'm still here... i've been busy freelancing, teaching and looking for studio space in philly. all quite time consuming. here's an illo i just did for my own homework assignment (from the illustrator class i am teaching). each student got a month to design... and was to be inspired by its birthstone. november is kind of interesting, as it has two. citrine and topaz - depending on if you are modern or traditional... after much internal debate, i decided to go mod. and cute. (see the whole thing here)

(crops from the poster - click above to see full image)

i'm back. here's a poster i created at anderson workshop. various (dynamic) flash components were used to create and distribute the top background patterns. i created a ton during this fun/intense week long workshop at anderson ranch.

(the type is backwards as when youre inside the ranch the type is cut out from the entrance sign and you can see the mountains through it. also, those birds are magpies. they're fun looking. kind of like flying penguins.)

* it is so hard to photograph books... but here's my somewhat distorted solution :)

* this is my 30th "official" sketchbook since starting count in 1995. the cover uses imagery inspired by my "5 senses" prints. for this image i just played around with the images on silkscreens and i only "registered" where i wanted to.

* the binding is a coptic binding / single needle link stitch.

* for the inside pages, i used a variety of graph papers as well as some english and japanese alphabet practice paper.
