These are my first illustrations for The Hartford Courant. They ran a series of stories this week covering the college application process. The drawing on the top ran with a pair of stories that dealt with how both the students and the parents deal with the anxious waiting period in different ways.
The story that the bottom drawing ran with was about a new breed of private consultants who promise to help get your kid into the best school, starting very early on.

a few things i like about these drawings:
-that classic, earnest look in the dog's eyes as if to say, "they're worked up about something -- i'm not sure what! -- but now i'm excited, too!"
-the competitive-to-the-point-of-snooping next-door neighbors & the neutral mailman (did he get to go to college?)
-the ivy league dealer's 5 o'clock shadow, his disheveled gut and shit-brown tie.
-the obligatory new millennium-teen's hoodie & backpack combo.
-the streetlight casting its dismal glow on barbed wire (a pictorial synonym for "illegal activity").
-matching steaming cups of coffee, signifying the interruption of this family's casual, saturday spring morning.
