Convenience stores have always been a place of influence for me. The quick and easy, they show our transient lives. Our shortened appetites for relief.

I shot 1500 pictures of Joan Green's Garden recently for a book project I've been working on. This is an oak on her property. I stole the neighbors views to shoot this image. It's a composite photograph made up of dozens of images stitched together.

The garden is incredible, and was recently on the Open Days Garden Conservancy tour along with my own garden. She sets a new standard in garden care.

Try this when you get a chance: Photoshop CS3> file> automate> photomerge , you'll like it. It changed the way I shoot photos. Take a look: www.mrpanoramaman.com

This week my Invisible Woman, Corrie Pikul, wrote a piece called Drip Stop for New York Magazine. In it, she tests and reports on the latest array of sweat prevention tools. If perspiration is problem for you, please peruse.

Corrie's report received a wonderful full page treatment including the eye-catching illustration by Peter Arkle seen above. You can see more of Peter's work on his website: peterarkle.com

"Small world" side note: Peter happens to be the husband of an editor at ELLE magazine, where Corrie works full-time!

Week of the zines:

An image for the folks at crayonlegs.com who are doing a 'zine about "Facial Hair".

stuartkolakovicthisit.jpg
An image for a zine put together by some Kingston students called "This is it". This is for the "Fun" themed issue. I can't think of anything more fun than flying a kite whilst wearing a bear skin.
I'm also featured in issue five of Document's +1 magazine. You can pick it up for free at hip and with it boutiques or download it as a PDF zine from plus1mag.com .

I'm extremely happy to announce that I will be working on a new separate comic book that will (eventually) be published by Blankslate Books. Blankslate is a new independent publisher set up by Kenny Penman and James Hamilton, founders of Forbidden Planet international. At the moment I'm still bouncing around some ideas and have just started to sketch to get a feel for how I want to tell the story. I plan to start working on finished artwork by the beginning of September. In the meantime, go check out the Blankslate blog for it's imminent publishing schedule- they've got some rad stuff planned...

Last Friday I was fortunate to see the Antonio López García exhibition at the MFA Boston. Having long admired his work, I was thrilled to see so many of his paintings, drawings, and sculptures in person. If you have the time and the inclination, I highly recommend seeing it before it closes July 27th.

While all of Antonio López García's works are incredible, his drawings are especially stunning. Their attention to detail and their incredible depiction of light is astounding. One can stare at these for hours. Although my egg drawing above pales in comparison, I kept Antonio's graphite gradations of tone in mind while I worked on it.

Recently I read two excellent graphic novels by the Italian comics creator Gipi. Both Garage Band and Notes For A War Story tell small yet compelling stories through rich characters and gorgeous art. While the characters are simply drawn, the landscapes they inhabit are intricate and impressive. Executed in pencils and watercolor, many panels are mini masterpieces. Above is my own watercolor cityscape inspired by his.

Gipi has his own blog. It is in Italian and you can see it here.

I like Old San Juan. It's old. This is in the town square where the taxi drivers sit waiting for their next fare.

The fort has been around since the 1600's and everything else around it was ancient too. I did some paintings on the bus that are some of my favorites.

On a painting... I take notes on the back of the art, note colors, details etc, and then paint it in the hotel room or when I get home. I use a dip pen, and sepia india ink. Sometimes with a pencil sketch underneath or if I feel confident, then right to ink.

A quick full pager to accompany an interview with Carl Shipman, one of the first British skaters to ever make it big in America. If I got to draw "RAD" stickers for every illo job, I'd be much happier. This one was a bit of a challenge to draw; the editor wanted a straight up portrait of Shipman, but didn't have any sample shots for me to draw from. We both spent far too long trawling the internet searching for any photo portraits of him, but to no avail. In the end I had to resort to climbing up into my Dad's attic to rummage through my extensive childhood sk8rat mags until I found a few snaps of him. Elusive.
And if you really want to know more about what it's like to be a pencil pusher, go to the July issue of Australian based readersvoice.com for an interview with me.

an_even_apart_sketches_500.jpg

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the inspiring "An Event Apart" conference up in Boston. If you are a web designer / coder and don't read the invaluable A List Apart website (which created the annual multi-city conference), start today. Lots of great talk about CSS, Javascript and web design issues.

Luckily for me, this means two days of near-motionless models to draw in my sketchbook from a row in the back of the room. The models did a great job, holding their hour-long poses with a minimum of fidgeting. Thank you An Event Apart attendees, for allowing me to draw your bald heads and wrinkled shirts.

Believe it or not, the act of sketching lets me focus more on what is being said, and I do believe the ideas 'take' better than if I was just sitting staring at a tiny person on a stage.
