I recently had the opportunity to work with Anna Rosenblum Palmer and winwinapps to create a background illustration for their recent iPhone app: Patience. It was a cool challenge as one end of the illustration had to flow continuously into the other end. The purpose of the app is to create a pleasing way to implement impulse control with the illo slowly scrolling along against some nice chill music. The app is free as well.

First off: I have finally redesigned my website! For a long while I’ve been wanting to move away from a Flash based portfolio to some good ol’ html and css, which I created through the folks at Indexhibit. Here’s the new site in all its ipad/iphone-friendly glory: www.paulantonson.com

So as I’ve mentioned recently, I’ve been hashing out a story while simultaneously gearing my portfolio more towards kids books. These three friends are the protagonists of my story so far: Toad, a Mourning Dove and a Glasswing Butterfly. Throughout this process I’ve found myself increasingly influenced by the color and dynamics of today’s comics and I’ll be applying that more going forward.

Olympic Pin for Wall Street Journal

In the course of my employ in the wsj.com art department I recently had the opportunity to design their Olympic pin. Pin trading is a long tradition at the Olympics so it was an honor to do it. Editor Adam Thompson had requested I do something fun that perhaps included a beaver or perhaps a mountie. So I came up with these designs and naturally the beaver-on-snowboard look won out. I delivered the vector version (top right) and it was cool to see how the final product came out (top left). One of these just sold on ebay for $52.75!

hi! it’s me again! Having a 9.5 month old certainly keeps me busy (in a great way!!) But i have begun to emerge from my shell and create some artwork again. (And… I am soon am taking an illustration class, taught by tim gough at uarts, and hopefully i will be making some great new work in the not-to-distant future!)
In the meantime, i have begun to design baby shower and wedding invitations for the two very popular websites tiny prints and wedding paper divas. The baby shower invitations are selling very well, and some wedding invitations just went up this week. (You can see the wedding designs on my website blog, here.)

Skateboard Nation

Over the years I’ve done a lot of skateboarding, most intensely in the mid-eighties to early nineties and these days cruising the streets of midtown Sacto on a longboard. Recently the Wall Street Journal’s Conor Dougherty wrote about what an incredibly skate-friendly city Portland Oregon is and to my luck the WSJ editors requested an interactive map of the best skateparks across the US. As soon as I got the assignment I knew what to do. Wedding Invitations

This past May my sweetie Kristina and I tied the knot in the Hudson Valley north of New York City where we were living. We’ve since relocated into the chillness of northern California. The wedding was an amazing time and a wonderful way to wrap up our 10 years in the city. Below is the invitation I designed and illustrated. It was a fun challenge to create the illo in such a way that it would align in the middle of the gatefold.

yes. its been a REALLY long time since i posted. Last we “spoke” i was getting married… well, i did… and then 9 months later (plus a day) i gave birth to a beautiful baby boy! needless to say, it’s been a very exciting year.

i have just begun to emerge from the baby bubble… and will slowly begin to create again (time permitting, of course) but here’s something recent that i designed & really like. i created the artwork & designed the poster for the riverfolk music + art festival in Manchester, MI. i hope for more fun projects such as this in the coming year.

Spoonflower is a pretty amazing website / service that prints up custom made fabric from your designs (and for a very reasonable price). Earlier this year, Julie and I collaborated on a fabric design, using elements she drew for use on her re-designed website. I designed the pattern from the shapes, and took cues for the palette from her work.
Spoonflower has a cool weekly contest for the community, where they pick six designs that have been submitted and have an online vote open to the public to vote for the “Fabric of the Week”.
